Auxiliary protective or safety devices; commutation, improving by means of inductances.-Toreduce sparking and flashing over at the commutators of dynamo-electric machines upon the occurrence of an abnormal current flow, two or more points of the armature winding differing in potential are interconnected, either directly or through impedances, such as choking coils. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, points of the armature winding 7 are connected to slip-rings 9, the circuit through which is closed upon the flow of an excess current by the closure of a quick-acting relay 25 which operates before the main circuit-breaker 12. In a modification, a single solenoid and plunger serve to actuate the circuit-breaker and the switch 16; the circuit-breaker may open the fieldmagnet circuit of the machine prior to the opening of the armature short-circuit. The armature short-circuit may be effected manually.
