Abstract

1,208,939. Recording and playback; sensing records. R.C.A. CORPORATION. 26 July, 1968 [9 Aug., 1967], No. 35719/68. Headings G4M and G5R. A record track of a kind susceptible to damage extending part of the way across the track is read along an area narrower than the track and is re-read along a second laterallyshifted area if an error is detected in the information read. As shown, in a system which may be of the type described in Specification 1,034,373 or 1,034,374, a magnetic track on a card 20 is first read along its centre. Detection of an error by a parity checker 23 causes the card 20 to be retained for a further reading and the head assembly 18 to be shifted to read nearer to one edge of the track. If an error is detected in this second reading, a third reading is effected nearer to the other edge of the track. An alarm is actuated if an error persists to the third reading.
