Abstract

1,208,375. Epoxy-derived polyesters for plasticizing P.V.C. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 14 Oct., 1968 [13 Oct., 1967], No. 48616/68. Headings C3P and C3R. A polyester of molecular weight 800-4000 is made by reacting at 150-250‹ C. ( 1 ) a dicarboxylic acid with 6 to 13 carbon atoms, (2) an epoxide of formula where R is alkyl with 4 to 16 carbon atoms or is a group of formula R<SP>1</SP>-O-CH 2 - where R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl or acyl with 4 to 16 carbon atoms, and (3) a terminator which is an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or a monohydric alcohol, with 2 to 22 carbon atoms. Component (2) may be mixed with an aliphatic dihydroxy alcohol having 2 to 6 carbon atoms or comprises mixtures of two or more different epoxides of the above formula with or without the alcohol. Specified dicarboxylic acids are adipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic, brassylic, phthalic, isophthalic, and terephthalic acids and a mixture of adipic acid and phthalic acid. Specified dihydric alcohols are ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,3-, 1,4- and 2,3-butylene glycol, 2-methyl- 2,4-pentanediol and 1,6-hexanediol. In the examples the epoxides used are a mixture of n-hexyl, n-octyl and n-decyl glycidyl ethers. The polyesters may be used for plasticizing polyvinyl chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride, these polymers preferably having a molecular weight of 10,000 to 500,000, the polyester being used in an amount of 35-100 parts per 100 parts of vinyl polymer, by weight.
