Abstract
1,208,069. Electro-magnetically controlled brakes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 11 March, 1968 [3 April, 1967], No. 11817/68. Heading F2E. Brake solenoids 10, 12 are energized with halfwave rectified current from an A.C. source 14 to hold off brake shoes (not shown) from a brake drum on an electric motor shaft, when the motor is switched on. The solenoids initially receive a high pull in current via normally closed contacts 20, contacts 26 (which are closed on energization of a relay coil 22), and relay coil 28. After the solenoids have become fully energized, the relay 28 opens contacts 20 and a resistor 18 is inserted in series with the solenoids to reduce the current therein to a minimum level necessary to hold off the brake shoes. On switching off the supply to the motor and solenoid circuit, relay 22 is de-energized and relay contacts 34 open, thereby inserting a resistor 32 in a closed loop discharge current path of solenoid 10 causing it to be de-energized rapidly, thus allowing rapid brake application, while solenoid 12 is discharged through a closed loop including a diode 36 and a conductor 38 and which loop being a lower resistance the discharge of energy from solenoid 12 is slower than that of solenoid 10 resulting in a delayed braking action. Alternatively, the solenoid 12 may be omitted.
