Abstract

1,207,152. Heating artificial filaments. COURTAULDS Ltd. 27 Feb., 1968 [28 Feb., 1967], No. 9420/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C1] Carbon filaments are made by heating, e.g. at 200-300‹ C., filaments of an organic polymeric material in an inert or (preferred) oxidizing atmosphere in a fluidized bed of an inert heat transfer medium, followed by carbonization. In the example, polyacrylonitrile filaments are heated at 250‹ C. for 1 hour in a bed of glass beads, followed by carbonization for 4 hours at 1000‹ C. Cellulosic, polyamide or polyester filaments may also be treated.
