[Also in Division G1] The proportion of sucrose in the total of dissolved substances of Intermediate products in sugar manufacture is determined by measuring the refractive index (n) of a sample and the polarimetric angle of rotation (α) and combining them with the known refractive index (No) of pure water in the quotient α/n-No. The apparatus includes the necessary quotient calculating means which may give both an anologue and a digital indication. An internationally accepted purity quotient can be derived by multiplying the above quotient by factor F which takes into account, polarimetric path length and temperature and either quotient may be used for process control. The polarimetric and refractometer may be connected serially in the flow or in parallel, and the temperature of the samples is controlled, a thermistor in the sample flow path providing temperature compensation in the calculating circuit. Various stages in the process may be sampled and a fixed proportion of a solvent such as pure water is added to each sample by driving the sample and solvent pumps with a common motor, the sample and solvent being mixed in a motor driven mixer.
