Novel 5-substituted 1,2,4-triazoles of general formula in which R 1 and R 2 are each lower alkyl (1 to 5 carbon atoms) radicals, or taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a heterocyclic radical of 5 or 6 ring atoms; R 3 is a mercapto group or a lower alkyl, aryl, halogeno-aryl, lower aralkyl, lower halogeno-aralkyl, lower aryloxyalkyl or lower halogeno-aryloxyalkyl radical (1 to 5 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety) or a heterocyclic radical, and R 4 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or lower aralkyl radical, are prepared by cyclizing a semi-oxamazide of the formula with a thioamide, an s-methylated thioamide, an imino ether hydrochloride, an alkyl isothiocyanate, or an aryl isothiocyanate containing appropriate radicals corresponding to R 3 and R 4 .
