Abstract

1,206,050. Sheet forming. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 6 Nov., 1968, No. 52536/68. Addition to 1,202,728. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C3] In the cold drawing process claimed in claim 1 of Specification 1,202,728, the working material is either a polyethylene or an ethylene-rich copolymer containing a plasticizer which when blended with the polyethylene or the copolymer reduces its modulus of elasticity by at least 30%, or a polyethylene or an ethylene-rich copolymer having a density within the range 0À91 to 0À94 gms./c.c., a melt index within the range 0À11 to 4 gms./10 mins. at 190‹ C. under an applied load of 2À16 kgs. and a melt index/ intrinsic viscosity relationship such that for a given polymer having a melt index in said melt index range the intrinsic viscosity is greater than that indicated by the appropriate point in the line in the graph constituting Fig. 1 of the drawing. Examples of suitable plasticizer containing polyethylene working materials are polyethylene containing 3 or 10% of calcium stearate; polyethylene containing 3 or 10% of propylene; polyethylene containing 3 or 10% of mineral oil known as " Risella " (Registered Trade Mark); polyethylene containing 3 or 10% of dioctylphthalate; polyethylene containing 3 or 10% of microcrystalline wax; polyethylene containing 3 or 10% of a mixture of C14-C16 alkyl benzenes; or polyethylene containing 3 or 10% ethylene-propylene rubber. Suitable ethylene rich copolymers are those in which ethylene and butene-1 are reacted under a Ziegler lowpressure polymerization process, specific percentages of ethylene and butene-1 are 78À5 and 21À5, 85 and 15, and 89 and 11.
