Abstract

1,205,916. Safety harness buckles. F. G. HUGHES. ,16 July, 1969 [24 July, 196S], No. 35744/69. Heading E2A. A buckle assembly for seat safety harness includes strap tongue plates 16, 18 having portions thereof intercoupling the plates, the plates being positioned adjacent each other, a buckle having a frame formed with an opening therein for receiving the plates in juxtaposed relationship to be intercoupled by the intercoupling portions, and latch means mounted in the frame and releasably engaging one of the plates to retain .both plates in the frame, As shown, the buckle assembly 20 includes upper and lower connected frames 22, 24 and a pivoted latch member 26 having a protruding part 26a and biassed in an anticlockwise direction by a spring 28 such movement being limited by an operating memher 30 moved by a spring 33 in a clockwise direction and in the opposite direction by depression of a push button 34. Insertion of the tongue 18 attached to a lap safety belt 14 causes an opening in the tongue to 'be engaged by the part 26a of the latch 26 and subsequent insertion of the tongue 16 attached to a shoulder safety belt 12 turns a lock bar 54 against the bias of a spring when the boss 16a of the tongue engages in the opening 18a of the tongue 18, the lock bar being moved back to the position shown in the figure. Operation of the push button 34, pivots the member 30 to depress the latch 26 when the tongues may be removed from the buckle. The tongue may have a degree of lateral angular movement. The arrangement is such that false latching is prevented by insertion of the tongue 18 prior to the tongue 16. In a modification, the boss 16a is replaced by a spring-loaded latch engageable in a opening in the tongue 18.
