Abstract

1,175,804. Buckles. J. H. FREI. 26 Feb., 1968 [30 June, 1967; 22 Dec., 1967], No. 9190/68. Heading E2A. A buckle for a safety seat belt comprises two inter-engageable buckle parts 10, 14 with abutment portions for mutual interconnection to prevent separation of the buckle parts, and a bar 18 on one buckle part 10 which is arranged as a latching member and is moveably guided in opposed slots 36 for translatory movement in its transverse direction between a latching position and a release position in order in these positions to prevent and permit shifting of the abutment portions out of mutual interconnection, said bar being spring biased into latching position by a leaf spring 20 interposed between the bar and a fixed abutment 21 on the buckle part 10, means 37 for operating the bar and means for the connecting straps of the seat belt to the buckle parts 10-14. In the construction shown, the buckle part 14 is a tongue having an angularly bent end portion 14' which provides one of the abutment portions, the other abutment portion being the edge of a slot 13 in a web 11 of the buckle part 10. The means 37, for moving the bar 18 to the release position is a flap pivoted between flanges 12 of the web and one end portion of which engages the bar when the other end portion is raised so that the bar is moved to the release position. The strap engaging means of one buckle part is a slideable bar 15, the strap being held between the bar and a fixed bar 17; the other strap is passed through slots in the tongue 14. Another construction is described in which instead of a pivoted flap for moving the bar 18, a slideable cover is provided having a ridge extending from one end which engages the bar 18; the means for engaging the strap to the buckle, part 10 again is a slideable bar and the end portions of this bar and also of the bar 18 pass through slots in flanges of the buckle part 10 and engage in grooves in side walls of the cover, the cover being U-shaped to hold the cover to the buckle part 10. The abutment portions are provided by bosses on the web 11 of the buckle part 10 which engage in apertures in the buckle part 12, an edge of each aperture providing the abutment on the part 12. To prevent rattle the bar 18 has an O-ring trapped in a groove which resiliently holds the buckle part 14 in engagement with the web 11 of the buckle part 10. The buckle part 14 is either provided with a slideable bar for engaging the strap or with slots through which the strap is passed.
