Abstract

1,205,695. Collapsible steering assemblies. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 10 April, 1969 [10 April, 1968], No. 17235/68. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] A steering assembly for a motor vehicle comprises a longitudinally collapsible steering shaft 10 having fixed to a lower end portion a flexible coupling including resiliently interconnected input and output members 32, 34 and a thrustbearing ball 54 interposed between the members 32, 34 to transmit thrust between them on collapse of the steering shaft. The ball also centralizes the members 32, 34 which are interconnected by resilient bushes 36 bonded to pins 38 of the output member 34 and engaging apertures in the input member 32. Square section surfaces 44, 46 are provided on the members 32, 34 to transmit rotary motion between them should the pins fail. The assembly also includes a jacket tube 18, which supports the shaft 10 in thrust bearings and has an expanded mesh energy absorbing portion 28, and frangible pins 16, 26 between the shaft portions and between a bracket 24 and mounting members thereon.
