Abstract
1,205,651. Coated sheet material. BEXFORD Ltd. 7 Aug., 1968 [24 Aug., 1967], No. 39112/67. Addition to 1,080,817. Heading B2E. A film material comprises a support base of polyester film at least one surface of which has been treated with a solution or dispersion in a volatile medium of at least one of a halogencontaining phenolic substance or chloro-substituted aliphatic acid at at least 30‹C. and having an interlayer which is one of (a) vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymer which may be partially hydrolised, (b) vinylidene chloride-aorylonitrile copolymer or copolymers of vinylidene chloride with acrylic and methacrylic esters, (c) homo- or co-polymers of vinyl halogeno-acetates (d) phenyl-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde or melamine-formaldehyde resins, (e) cellulose nitrate or cellulose acetate butyrate or (f) homopolymers of acrylic or methacrylic acids or esters, or copolymers of these with other vinyl monomers, or mixtures of these, and a further hydrophilic layer comprising a water-swellable ester organic film-forming material which has been insolubilised and which contains finely divided discrete particles of inorganic filler or fillers. Numerous suitable halogen-containing phenolic substances and solvents for their application are specified. The halogen-containing phenolic substance or thechloro-substituted aliphatic acids may be applied in the solution or dispersion used for the application of the interlayer. Numerous suitable water-soluble organic film forming materials are listed such as cellulose ethers, polyacrylamides sodium alginate, natural gum such as gum arabic, carbohydrates and proteins such as casein and zein. These materials may be insolubilised by the application of heat or the inclusion of a suitable cross-linking agent of which many are specified such as urea-formaldehyde, dialdehydes, dibasic acids, hydrochloric acid, copper sulphate, organic titanates and epoxy resins. Catalysts such as magnesium chloride, zinc chloride, alum and ammonium sulphate may be present to accelerate the curing time. The finely divided filler may be clay, kaolin, talc, bentonite, sepiolite, mica, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, colloidal silica, diatomaceous silica, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, barium carbonate, barium sulphate and calcium sulphate. They are preferably of size less than one micron.
