Abstract
1445866 Compositions for copying systems SANKO CHEMICAL CO Ltd and KANZAKI PAPER MFG CO Ltd 27 Sept 1973 [27 Sept 1972] 45246/73 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Divisions D1-D2] A sheet material for use in a pressure sensitive copying system comprises a sheet provided with a coating capable of producing a colour on contact with a chromogenic material, the coating comprisin gparticles comprising both (a) one or more aromatic carboxylic acids and/or polyvalent metal salts thereof and (b) one or more polymers selected from homo- and co-polymers of styrene, α-methyl styrene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylic and methacrylic esters, and cyclopentadiene copolymers of vinylidene chloride, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, and allyl alcohol, polychloroprene, and condensation products of (a) m-xylene and formaldehyde, (b) diphenyl ether and formaldehyde, (c) diphenyl ether, mxylene, and formaldehyde, and (d) benzyl chloride. The particles may be obtained by pulverising a solid mixture or solid melt of the components (a) and (b); or by dissolving components (a) and (b) in an organic solvent, evaporating the latter, and pulverizing the resultant solid; or by liquefying components (a) and (b) by heating or dissolution in an organic solvent, dispersing the resultant liquid in water, removing any organic solvent, thereby obtaining water-dispersed particles. Alternatively, the acid or salt may be mixed with a vinyl monomer, polymerization initiator and regulator, and a suspension or emulsion polymerization in water may be effected to obtain the desired particles. In yet another method, an alkali metal or ammonium salt of the aromatic carboxylic acid may be added to an emulsion of the polymer, followed by addition of an acid or an aqueous solution of a polyvalent metal salt. A water-insoluble inorganic material such as an oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate of the polyvalent metal, or a mineral pigment, e.g. clay, kaolin, activated clay, zinc oxide, calcium carbonate, aluminium hydroxide, or an organic powder, e.g. powdered starch or cellulose or organic pigment may be incorporated into the particles. An aliphatic carboxylic acid and/or polyvalent metal salt thereof, may also be incorporated to improve the compatibility of components (a) and (b) and the colour-forming property. The particles may be applied to the sheet in the form of a suspension in a liquid medium comprising conventional solvents and optionally binders. The coating composition may contain water-insoluble inorganic materials of the type described above. Tin silicate, zinc silicate, barium sulphate, talc, and aluminium silicate are additionally specified. The coating composition may contain capsules enveloping colour former when making self-contained copying papers. Plasticizers may also be included in coating compositions of the organic solvent type. The sheet may be a paper of natural or synthetic fibres, or plastics film, and may be provided with a barrier coat of a natural or synthetic high M.W. polymer.
