Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a porous crosslinked PVA useful as a packing material for chromatography, by disslving or suspending a salt in an aqueous PVA solution, adding to and reacting with the resulting solution or suspension, a crosslinking agent, and if necessary, extracting the salt from the reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: A porous crosslinked PVA having a specific area of above 0.1m2/g is obtained by dissolving or finely suspending in (A) an aqueous PVA solution in which a linear PVA is dissolved, (B) a salt such as NaCl or CaSO4, adding (C) a crosslinking agent such as glutaraldehyde to the resulting solution or suspension, suspending the resulting mixture in (D) an oil dispersing medium such as toluene, reacting the final dispersion and if necessary, extracting the salt from the reaction product. As component A, there is used an aqueous solution prepared by dissolving a linear PVA having a polymerization degree of several tens to several thousands and a saponification degree of at least 50mol%, in an amount to provide a 2W30% concentration. Component C is used usually in an amount of at least 5mol% based on OH groups of component A.
