Abstract

1,205,451. Heat-treating bored steel rolls. BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP. Aug. 25, 1967 [Aug.29, 1966; Aug. 4, 1967], No.39158/67. Heading C7N. The roll is mounted vertically and successive annular zones are heated above the critical temperature and then quenched, a flow of coolant being maintained through the bore throughout the process; the hardened zones may be progressively immersed in a coolant bath and kept there until the roll body is below the temperature at which tempering occurs. As shown in Fig.1, roll 106 is supported on centre post 112 which is rotated by a fluid motor and is supported on lower cross-head 96 supported from upper cross-head 94. By operation of motor 48, screws 70, 72 are rotated thereby lowering the cross-heads and causing the roll to pass through induction coil 218 and quenching ring 220 before immersion in coolant bath 14. When completely immersed the roll is transferred to shuttle car 228 (Fig. 2) which removes it from the hardening apparatus and holds it in bath until cooling is complete.
