Abstract

1,205,378. Breaking concrete. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 10 Feb., 1969, No. 7173/69. Heading B5E. [Also in Divisions C1 and F3] A method of cracking concrete comprises drilling a bore hole in concrete to be cracked, placing in the hole a combustible composition comprising a metallic reducing agent and an oxidizer, there being 10-60 parts by weight of metallic reducing agent per 90-40 parts by weight of oxidizer, and means for firing the composition, filling the remainder of the hole with sufficient sealing material to prevent blow out occurring when the composition is fired, and firing the combustible composition. The reducing agent may consist of zirconium, magnesium, silicon, aluminium, aluminiummagnesium alloy and boron, and the oxidizer may consist of potassium perchlorate, potassium chloride, potassium nitrate, barium nitrate, barium peroxide, lead tetroxide and lead menooxide. The composition is granulated using a binder consisting of 1-10 parts by weight of rubber, synthetic rubber or synthetic resin per 100 parts by weight of the sum of the reducing agent and oxidizer. In carrying out the method, a cartridge consisting of a plastic body 1, which is filled with the combustible composition 4 and is closed at one end 3 and fitted with an electric squib 5 at the other, is placed in the bore hole and the remainder of the hole is filled with a cement paste, mortar cement is concrete mixed with a quick-setting agent, or a quick-setting cement. The quick-setting cement or agent may comprise calcium chloride, water glass, sodium carbonate, hydrosilicofluorate plastic or resin concrete, an epoxy or alkali-amide plastics, or other inorganic high molecular weight materials. Sand 9 may be used for partly filling long holes. A plurality of cartridges may be used in rows of holes, the rows being fixed in sequence. The bore holes may be inclined when cracking concrete pillars.
