Abstract
1,205,359. Producing neutrons. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 23 July, 1969 [8 Aug., 1968], No. 36968/69. Heading G6P. In a fast neutron source, employing the reaction T(d,n)4He, the rate at which the emitting layer is depleted in tritium and enriched in deuterium is reduced, thus increasing the life of the source. The neutron emitting tritiated target is mounted on a passive support, a thin intermediate barrier being interposed between the target and support. The barrier prevents the flow of deuterous from the support to the target and the flow of tritium into the support. In one embodiment, the support is formed of a hydrogenisable metal, so that deuterium passing through the barrier layer is retained. In a second embodiment, the support is formed of a non-hydrogenisable metal and the deuterium which passes through is removed by vacuum extraction or electrolytically.
