Abstract
1,205,236. Electrostatic printing; selective printing. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd. 7 June, 1968 [8 June, 1967], No. 26555/67. Headings B6C and B6F. [Also in Divisions G1 and G5] A display and printing device comprises a body of liquid 30 in a container and having a free surface F; electrodes 23, 24 spaced from the free surface; means for energizing selected electrodes whereby an electrostatic stress is applied to a corresponding region of the liquid to cause it to move physically in that region; and a light source 31; whereby the light 33 escapes through the free surface at the stressed (moved) regions only, to provide an information pattern. As described the charge is applied to selected pairs of X and Y-electrodes 23, 24. There may instead be a matrix of metal pins looped by X and Y-electrodes. Viewing systems.-(I) As shown, the liquid 30 is edge-illuminated; the stressed portion sticks to a land 25A in a glass block 20 by surface tension, providing a light-escape path 33, 34. (II) In a second embodiment (not shown) an opaque non-conductive layer of liquid overlies the transparent layer 30. In use the transparent layer (which is conductive) is preferentially attracted, breaking through the opaque layer to provide the light-escape path. Printing.-The liquid 30 may be a transparent ink, and the block 20 with the ink adhered to it be used as a printing head.
