1527326 Matrix displays; liquid crystal display devices STANDARD TELEPHONE & CABLES Ltd 17 March 1977 11335/77 Heading G5C A panel displays a legend, either formed by or disclosed by adjacent individual electro-optical cells when these are activated in front of a light source. In Fig. 1, the legends 12a, 12b in front of light sources 11a, 11b are blocked from view by opaque cells 13a, 13b while the lowermost legend is made visible by energization of the lowest cell. To display a character formed from the cells, each cell may be illuminated (Fig. 2) by a bundle of light guides 22, clustered near to a lamp source; a lens 24 adjacent to each cell further concentrates the light. Alternatively an array of cells may be placed adjacent to a luminous or reflective panel (Fig. 3, not shown). The cells may rely on liquid crystal, electrophoretic, electrochromic, or electrically frustrated total internal reflection effects. If depending on nematic liquid crystals between polarizers, colour variation may be obtained by control of energization, extending to full opacity; by insertion of a retarding film colour contrast may be obtained.
