Abstract

The panel (3) carries a coplanar array of terminations of gps. of optical fibres (2') arranged to present a variety of e.g. alphanumeric characters (10) by the selective coupling of individual fibres or gps. to a source (1) of light, which illuminates a bundle (6) of fibres directed separately (11) towards the gps. terminated at the panel. The selective coupling is performed by a grid (9) of liq. crystal elements (12,12') positioned between the ends (8) of the source fibres (11,'' etc.) and those (4) of the gps. Each element is switched electrically between an opaque state and a transparent state.
