Abstract

A backlit liquid crystal display device having company branding. The device includes a liquid crystal display, a diffuser panel with associated lighting means, and a reflector panel to re-direct light towards a viewing surface of the display. A pattern of dots or lines in the form of a company logo or trademark is strategically located so as to provide company branding of the display when operated in a backlit mode.

They areparticularly advantageous in battery operated devices inview of their low power requirements. Many of theseapplications, of course, require night viewing, in whichcase backlighting is optionally provided for selectiveoperation.Backlit LCD assemblies conventionally include alight source or sources associated with a light diffuserpanel positioned behind the display. The light source orsources, for example, light emitting diodes, are positionedat one or more sides of the diffuser panel. The diffuserpanel is intended to make use of internal light guiding toprovide a more uniform backlit surface.‘ The diffuser panelmay also have a roughened or frosted surface to improve theuniformity of the backlighting.Prior ArtThe problem of uniformity in backlit LCDassemblies has been discussed in the prior art. In U.S.Patent 4,206,501, issued June 3, 1980, Brooks describes a1015202530CA 02264930 1999-03-05diffusing backplate interposed between the light sourceand the display. The diffusing backplate, which is anexposed negative photographic film, has selectivelydarkened areas for attenuating light rays from the lightsource.U.S. Patent 4,673,254, which issued June 16, 1987to Kato et al, describes a back reflection type lightdiffusing assembly including a light guiding plate. Thelight guiding plate is provided with a light reflectingplate on the side opposite the radiation side. The lightreflecting plate is provided with non-reflecting portions,the purpose of which is to improve the uniformity of thelight radiating from the light guiding plate.U.S. Patent 5,477,422, which issued December 19,1995 to Hooker et al, describes a similar arrangement. Inorder to balance the backlighting provided by the diffuserpanel, Hooker et a1 add light attenuating means to oneface of the diffuser panel. The light attenuating means,in the form of a pattern of dots, are distributed over onesurface of the diffuser panel to even out the lightdistribution.Great Britain patent GB 2143987A provides aliquid crystal analog (LCA) watch that simulates theappearance of mechanical hands that may be perceived by anobserver to be spaced from the dial of the watch. Theeffect is the result of creating an artificial parallax.United States patent 5,269,977 provides a lightreflective body useful for panel-type lighting; it isformed of a transparent inorganic or organic casted glassmember. The resulting foam layer is completelyintegral with the organic casted glass product.United States patent 4,656,466 provides a displaydevice in which the display contents by a display elementsuch as liquid crystal, as well as the display positionsand the display forms can be recognized in advance.The present invention utilizes the concept oflight attenuating means associated with the diffuser panelto provide a shadow mask for displaying information to theviewer while the display is in a backlit mode.Summary of the InventionIt is an object of the present invention toprovide a backlit LCD assembly having a shadow mask.It is a further object of the invention toprovide an LCD assembly wherein the shadow mask has aparticular pattern...—................_.__M._._ _. WO 98/103261015202530CA 02264930 1999-03-05PCT/CA97/00628It is a still further object of the presentinvention to provide an LCD assembly wherein the shadowmask pattern is a company logo for branding purposes.Therefore, in accordance with a first aspect ofthe present invention there is provided a backlit liquidcrystal display assembly comprising a liquid crystaldisplay having a back face and viewing face, a diffuserpanel adjacent the back face, light means associated withthe diffuser panel to selectively provide back lighting forthe liquid crystal display, and a reflection panelassociated with the diffuser panel, the reflector panelhaving a pattern of non—reflecting regions which provide acorresponding pattern when the display assembly, in thebacklit mode, is viewed from the viewing face.In accordance with a second aspect of theinvention there is provided a method of company branding aliquid crystal display device when operated in backlitmode, the device having a liquid crystal display, adiffuser panel having selectively operable lighting means,and a reflector panel associated with the diffuser panel todirect light toward the liquid crystal display, the methodcomprising: generating a shadow mask comprising a non-reflecting pattern corresponding to a company logo andlocating the shadow mask in relation to the liquid crystaldisplay such that the company logo is visible when theliquid crystal display is operated in backlit mode.Brief Description of the DrawingsThe invention will now be described in greaterdetail with reference to the attached drawings wherein:W0 98/ 103261015202530CA 02264930 1999-03-05PCT/CA97/00628FIGURE 1 is an exploded view of the displayassembly;FIGURE 2 is a plan View of the reflector platewith branding text; andFIGURE 3 is a front view of the display assembly.Detailed Description of the InventionFIGURE 1 shows an assembly diagram of the displayaccording to the present invention. This drawing relatesto an implementation of the display in relation to atelephone terminal, it being understood that the concept ofthe invention is not limited to such an application, butcan extend to any application involving a backlit LCDassembly.In FIGURE 1, the assembly includes front bezel 12,having opening 14 through which the display is viewed.Liquid crystal display 16, as is well known in the displayart, includes display elements for displaying alpha numericinformation such as time, date, telephone numbers, etc.Diffuser panel 18 provides back lighting for dark viewing.The diffuser panel has one or more light sources such aslight emitting diodes 20 along one or more edges of thepanel. The diffuser panel normally has a roughened face toprovide a more uniform light surface. Reflector panel 22positioned next to diffuser panel 18 reflects light fromthe diffuser panel forward towards the viewing surface.Reflector panel 22 is normally white or other stronglyreflecting colour. The shadow mask according to thepresent invention is imprinted on reflector plate 22 aswill be described in greater detail later. The assemblyalso includes LCD holder 24, clip—on circuit board 28, andW0 98/ 103261015202530CA 02264930 1999-03-05PCT/CA97/00628mylar panel 26. Circuit board 28 includes variousconductor lines and circuit elements as is well known.Elastomer connector 30 provides conductor paths fromcircuit board 28 to LCD 16.It is to be understood that clip-on circuit board28, shown in FIGURE 1, is not essential to operation of theassembly. Power and control signals can be supplied to theLCD and light sources by other means such as pigtailsand/or connectors.Reflector plate 22, as shown in FIGURE 2, isintended to reflect light from the diffuser panel 18forwardly towards the viewing plane. In thisimplementation, plate 22 has a smooth surface and a colourconducive to reflection of light. Normally the plate willbe white but other reflecting colours are anticipated bythe invention.The shadow mask 32 as shown in FIGURE 2 is apattern of dots, lines, etc., of an opaque or non-reflecting material. The shadow mask pattern 32 may takeon any form which is desired to be seen in conjunction withthe liquid crystal display when operated in the backlitmode. In a preferred embodiment the pattern is a companyname, logo or trademark. This will allow the identity ofthe manufacturer of the product in which the display isincorporated to be visible to a Viewer in a darkenedenvironment. The pattern 32 may, of course, have otherconfigurations depending on the application. These may bein the form of a reference grid, display line identifiers,etc.W0 98/103261015202530CA 02264930 1999-03-05PCT/CA97/00628When the pattern 32 is in the form of a companylogo or trademark, it will optionally be located near theouter perimeter of the reflector plate 22 so as not to beobliterated by the display elements when in the operationmode. The pattern may, of course, be located elsewhere,particularly if it is intended to form part of the displayformat. It is also within the scope of the invention tolocate the pattern directly behind the display elements ofthe LCD.The pattern, as indicated, is formed by non-reflecting or opaque dots or lines on the otherwisereflecting reflector plate. These may be formed by addingthe dots or lines to the reflecting surface by silk-screening, evaporation through masks, or by manyphotographic or photolithographic techniques.Alternatively, the reflecting plate 22 mayinitially be non—reflecting, and the reflecting materialdeposited everywhere over the non~reflecting surface exceptin those regions forming the pattern.In the above examples, the non-reflecting orabsorbing pattern 32 is deposited directly to the reflectorplate 22.It is also within the scope of the presentinvention to prepare the pattern on an otherwisetransparent film and to cause the film carrying the patternto adhere to the front surface of the reflector plate.This may be achieved utilizing photographic film or mylarfilm with the pattern imprinted thereon.CA 02264930 1999-03-05W0 98/10325 PCT/CA97/00628It is also within the scope of the invention todeposit or otherwise apply the opaque pattern directly tothe underside or back side of the reflector panel.FIGURE 3 shows one example of an application of5 this invention in relation to a telephone terminal having aLCD for displaying caller identification 34 among otherdata.While one embodiment of the invention has beendescribed and illustrated, it will be apparent to one10 skilled in the art that many alternatives will be possible.It is intended, however, that such alternatives will fallwithin the scope of the invention as defined by theappended claims.

Claims (4)

I CLAIM:
1. A liquid crystal display (LCD) device comprising, a liquid crystal display(16) having a front viewing face and a back face, a diffuser panel(18) adjacent said back face, light means(20) associated with said diffuser panel(18) to selectively provide back lighting for the liquid crystal display(16), a reflector panel(22) associated with said diffuser panel(18) to redirect light from the diffuser panel(18) towards said viewing face, and a pattern of non-reflecting regions formed on an otherwise transparent film located between the diffuser panel(18) and the reflector panel(22), the pattern of non-reflecting regions providing a corresponding visible pattern when the display, in a backlit mode, is viewed from the viewing face.
2. A liquid crystal display device as defined in claim 1 wherein the pattern of non-reflecting regions has an alpha-numeric format.
3. A liquid crystal display device as defined in claim 2 wherein the pattern of non-reflecting regions represents a company logo.
4. A method of company branding a liquid crystal display (LCD) device when selectively operated in backlit mode, the LCD device having a liquid crystal display(16), a diffuser panel(18) with selectively operable lighting means(20), and a reflector panel(22) associated with the diffuser panel(18) to direct light from the lighting means(20) to the liquid crystal display(16), the method comprising the steps of:
generating a shadow mask comprising a non-reflecting pattern corresponding to a company logo on an otherwise transparent film; and locating the transparent film between the diffuser panel(18) and the reflector panel(22) whereby the company logo is visible when the LCD device is operated in backlit mode.
