Abstract

985,223. Photo-electric devices. GENERAL TELEPHONE & ELECTRONICS LABORATORIES Inc. Feb. 8, 1962 [Feb. 23, 1961], No. 4871/62. Heading G1A. [Also in Divisions G4 and H1] A photo-electric device comprising a photoconductive layer 16 in contact with a strip of piezo-electric material 10, along which a pressure wave is launched by the sawtooth voltage source 30, is used to read out in sequence (in the form of voltage pulses developed across the resistor 28) the illuminated record holes 60, 62, 64, 66 in a punched card 32. A non-linear resistive strip may be placed between the piezo-electric strip 10 and its conductive backing 18. The photo-conductive layer 16 is covered by a transparent conducting sheet 24. A beam of light is directed upon the card 32 which is placed over this conducting sheet 24 and a voltage pulse (Fig. 3 not shown) is produced in the resistor 28 when the pressure wave travelling down the piezo-electric strip 10 is coincident with an illuminated part of the photo-conductive layer 16. The strip 10 is terminated in wave absorbers 20, 22. The piezo-electric strip 10 is polarised lead titanate-lead zirconate, the photo-conductive layer is activated cadmium sulphide and the non-linear resistive material is non photo-conductive cadmium sulphide powder embedded in an epoxy resin. Specifications 971,459 and 985,222 are referred to.
