1,204,916. Curving. CURTIS ENGS. Ltd. 20 Sept., 1968 [3 Nov., 1967], No. 50070/67. Heading B3E. A machine for bending and shaping flanged sheet metal articles comprises a pair of parallel shaping rollers 10 and 16 driven in opposite directions, the first roller 10 having an end flange 11 and the second roller 16 having an end surface 17, the machine also having a third end flanged guide roller 25 so located that a sheet metal blank, having an edge flange, fed over the guide rollers and through the nip of the shaping rollers, is compelled to follow an arcuate path and is bent with its edge flange, to an arcuate shape, a locator being provided adjacent the end flange of the guide roller to abut the edge flange of the blank to guide the blank by retaining it against the guide roller. The rollers are driven in opposite directions by an electric motor 19 through a gear-box 20 and gearing 21-24. On the inward side of the nip of the rollers is located the flanged guide roller 25 mounted in adjustable bearing blocks 28 movable in slides 30. Locator rollers 34 are mounted on a rod 33 carried by arms 31 on the guide roller shaft 32. The second shaping roller 16 is vertically adjustable by slidable bearing blocks 36 operated by hand wheels by means of screw-threaded bolts 39 engaging screw-threaded bores in bevel gears 41. When a flanged blank e.g. for a vehicle mudguard, is fed over the guide roller 25 into the nip of the shaping rollers 10, 16 the edge flanges of the blank pass between the end flanges 11 of the roller 10 and the end surfaces 17 of the roller 16 thus resisting any tendency for the edge flanges to wrinkle and distort during bending. The flanges 27 on the guide roller 25 and the locator rollers 34 accurately locate the blank whilst it is passing through the shaping rolls.
