Abstract
1,204,902. Electro-plating drums. SCHERING A.G. Oct.2, 1967 [Jan. 26, 1967], No. 44735/67. Heading C7B. Shaped plastic articles, e.g. of A-B-S copolymer, provided with an electrically conducting coating e.g. a metal layer 0À5 micron thick applied by chemical reduction, are bulk electroplated e.g. with Cu or Ni by placing them between the concentric, non-conducting outer and inner casings of a drum which is immersed in a plating electrolyte and rotated e.g. up to 9 rpm about an horizontal or inclined axis during electrolysis. The outer casing is perforated, preferably having perforations comprising more than 18% of its total outer surface area, e.g. comprising a plastic wire grid. The casings may be cylindrical or conical and have a polygonal cross-section. Preferably the inner casing is also perforated with one or more anodes positioned within. The inner surfaces of the end parts of the outer casing may be corrugated or embossed. A plurality of strip, knob- or pear-shaped cathodes may be attached to the outer casing inner surface. The drum may be rotated asymetrically.
