Abstract

120,448. Thornycroft, Sir J. I. Nov. 12, 1917. Extracting sugar.-A diffuser apparatus for extracting soluble substances from vegetables, or sugar syrup from sugar beet, consists of a vertical column up which the vegetable substance is forced by a. piston working in a vertical cylinder at the base of the column, while the extracting liquid passes down the column. The column 1, which is provided with a non- conducting casing 1<a> and a heating coil 25, terminates above in a hood 27 and below in a perforated conical portion 3 serving as a strainer. Below the conical portion 3 is a cylinder 6 separated from the column by a lift-valve 11. In the cylinder 6 is fitted a piston 16 which may be operated by hydraulic power. The substance to be treated is admitted to the cylinder 6 by a hopper 12 and a worm conveyer 15. A slide 14 cuts off the hopper 12 from the cylinder 6 while the piston 16 is making its stroke. Water and steam are introduced through inlets 23, 24 and fluid can also be circulated transversely across the column by means of rotary pumps through perforated portions 31, 33 of the walls of the column. Around the perforated portion 3 is arranged a conical casing 4 to receive the liquid extract, which escapes by an outlet 5<a>. A cylinder 43 provided with a piston is so arranged that liquid may be driven backwards through the strainer 3 to clean it, or through the cylinder 6 when charged with vegetable substance.
