Abstract

Apparatus suitable for conveying sheets of glass comprises a roller conveyer from which the sheets are passed on to a belt conveyer by a reciprocable carriage. Load-supporting bars 4 of a carriage 5 move between driven conveyer rollers 2 and conveyer belts 3. The carriage 5 travels along a frame 6 which is raised and lowered by linkage 18, 21 actuated by a cam 24 and a roller 23. For moving the carriage horizontally, a crank 12 is driven by a planet wheel mechanism 14, 16, 17; the cam 24 and the crank 12 being driven by a motor 7 via reduction gearing 8 and belts 9-11. The sheets are held on the bars 4 by electromagnetically operated devices 26, 27. When the trailing edge of a sheet being fed by the rollers 2 comes into alignment with a guide rail 28 of the belt conveyer, the motor 7 is automatically switched on and the sheet is lifted off the rollers 2 by the bars 4. The carriage having moved into the region of the belts 3, it is lowered and the sheet engaged by the belts. The carriage is then moved to its starting position, ready to be raised to engage the next sheet. The rollers 2 and the belts 3 are preferably of plastic having good gripping qualities, and the bars 4 are preferably of rubber or plastic.
