Abstract

[Also in Division E1] An aircraft freight loading pallet comprises a peripheral rectangular frame 1 covered by top and bottom sheets 2, 3, respectively. An external flange 4 carries a rubbing strip 5, recesses 7, 8, respectively receiving and protecting the edges of the sheets 2, 3. Spacing tiepieces 9 are secured through their flanges to the sheets 2, 3 to space and restrain them under load. The pallet is completely filled with dichlorodifluoromethane-blown polyurethane 10 under a pressure of 7¢ Ib./sq. inch, the pallet being divided by light gauge channel members 11 into a number of compartments fed in rapid succession with a predetermined amount of creamed fluid formed from a mix of isocyanate prepolymer and polyester resin with a catalyst. Air within the pallet is permitted to escape through a filling vent until the foam reaches the vent, which is then plugged off. To ensure satisfactory bonding the inside faces of the sheets 2, 3 are etch-primed or otherwise treated to produce a rough and/or adhesive surface. The pallet is clamped between large flat plates during the filling and foam setting to prevent quilting between the tie-pieces 9, the entire assembly being thermostatically heated. The density of the foamed material is about 6 1b./cu ft. Sockets are provided for lashing shackles 18 and for restraint sockets 13 some of which are also used as lifting sockets to receive sling pins.
