Abstract
1,204,220. Hydrofining; hydrocracking. SINCLAIR RESEARCH Inc. 21 Feb., 1968 [16 March, 1967], No. 8413/68. Heading C5E. A lubricating oil is produced by subjecting a solvent-extracted, solvent-dewaxed distillate mineral lube oil fraction having an aromatic carbon content of less than 10% to a two-step hydrogenation treatment comprising hydrofining the oil with a sulfur-insenstive catalyst at 600-800‹ F., H 2 : oil ratio of 500-3000 s.c.f/ barrel and a H 2 consumption of 50-200 s.c.f/ barrel, and hydro-cracking hydro-isomerizing the hydrofined oil with a fluoride promoted, Pt group metal-alumina catalyst at 450-700‹ F.; H 2 : oil ratio 3000-9000 s.c.f/barrel and H 2 consumption of 400-1600 s.c.f/barrel. The hydrofining catalyst is preferably a presulphided alumina based catalyst containing 8-20% wt. molybdena and 1-10 wt. per cent Co or Ni. The hydrocracking catalyst is preferably alumina containing 0À2-2 wt. per cent Pt and 1-15% fluorine. The starting oil may be solvent extracted with furfural, phenols, liquid SO 2 , nitrobenzene or DMF at 100-200‹ F. The dewaxing solvent may be a mixture of a C 6 -C 8 aromatic hydrocarbon and a C 6 -C 8 aliphatic ketone, e.g. toluene/MEK.
