[Also in Division A5] Novel bis-chromonyl compounds of the general formula and functional derivatives thereof, wherein P, Q, R, P 1 , Q 1 and R 1 are each a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxy, alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl, alkenyloxy, nitro, amino, cyano, substituted alkyl or substituted alkoxy group and X is a substituted or unsubstituted carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring or a straight or branched, saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon chain which may be interrupted by one or more carbocyclic or heterocyclic rings, oxygen atoms, sulphur atoms, nitrogen atoms, SO or SO 2 groups or NH or substituted NH groups, are prepared by (a) cyclization in one or more stages of a bisphenyl compound of the general formula or a functional derivative thereof, wherein Y and Z are -CO-CH 2 -CO-W and -OH, - CO-CH=CH-W and -OH, -H and -OC(W)=CHCOOR<SP>9</SP> or -H and W being a -COOH group or a functional derivative thereof or a group V hydrolysable and/or oxidizable to a COOH group or a functional derivative thereof and R<SP>9</SP> being a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, and Y<SP>1</SP> and Z<SP>1</SP> either together form the chain or a functional derivative thereof or are as Y and Z, with, if necessary, oxidation and/or hydrolysis of a group V to a COON group or a functional derivative thereof; (b) hydrolysis and/or oxidation in one or more stages of a group V in a bis-chromonyl compound of the general formula (c) dehydrogenation in one or more stages of a bis-chromonyl derivative of the general formula or a functional derivative thereof; and (d) when a salt is required, salification of the corresponding free bis-chromonyl compound of the first general formula above or a functional derivative thereof (other than the said salt).
