Abstract

1,203,919. Surge arresters. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 10 June, 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 29237/69. Heading H2H. A stack of spark-gaps and resistance rings forming a column in a surge arrester define a central channel so that internal pressure is constrained to act only on release devices at the ends of the column and not on the casing of the arrester. As shown, the casing 1 is closed at its ends by fracture diaphragms 5 attached to cover plates 3 which have radial spokes 9. A central channel 8 is formed through resistance rings 6 and insulating rings 7a supporting spark-gaps 7 which are serially connected by conductors 7e. The column is separated from the casing 1 by an annular space 10, and excessive thermal and mechanical forces break only the diaphragms 5. Safety valves may be used instead of the fracture diaphragms.
