Abstract
1,202,630. Glass rod and tube manufacture. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 1 Aug., 1968 [4 Aug., 1967], No. 36648/68. Heading ClM. In the manufacture of hollow or solid glass tubing by drawing, the glass is cooled by a confined stream of high velocity cool air passed over the surface of the tubing along an extended length of the tube and in a direction parallel to the tube. Glass tubing 10 drawn as by rollers 14 from an orifice 11 in a glass furnace is pulled through a catenary 12 to a horizontal path 13, where it is supported on rollers 15. A tunnel housing 16 surrounds tube 10 and rollers 15 and has a narrow inlet 18 for the tube 10 at the entrance and is open at the end 19 remote from the furnace. A conduit 21 adjacent the hot end 17 has a vacuum pump 22 to give high velocity air through the tunnel 16. Instead of such subatmospheric pressure, above atmospheric cool air may be blown through the tunnel, but this may deform the tubing. The inside of the tunnel 16 may be blackened to assist removal of heat from radiation.
