Abstract

1,202,574. Rear view mirrors. DESMO Ltd. 14 Oct., 1968 [23 Aug., 1967], No. 38808/67. Heading B7J. A rear view mirror comprises a mounting plate member 13, which is adapted to be secured by screws 17 wholly on the exterior surface of a vehicle, and is housed and substantially concealed with a peripheral skirt portion 20 of a base 12, the base 12 being detachably mounted on plate 13 by a locating engagement between a camming end 14 of plate 13 and a cooperating recessed portion 21, 22 in the base, and also by a locking engagement formed by a screw 24 passing through a clearance hole 23 in the skirt 20 and threaded into the other end 15 of the plate 13, so that upon locking engagement, the locating engagement is also locked and, in use, the base cannnot be separated from the plate 13 along a path normal to a plane tangential to the vehicle surface. The mirror head 10 is attached to a stem 11 integral with the base 12. In a first arrangement, the recess 22 tapers inwardly and the plate end 14 is similarly tapered so that locking occurs where the sides of the tapes engage. Alternatively, the end 14 is a clearance fit in recess 22 and locking occurs when the edge of skirt 20 engages the vehicle surface via a rubber or plastics gasket. In a second embodiment, a rectangular opening in the plate end 14 cams with either a tapered or clearance fitting torque on the base, Fig. 3 (not shown). Similarly, a frusto-conical or cylindrical peg on the base may engage in an opening in the plate end 14, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a further embodiment, skirt 20 flares outwardly and an inner inclined surface of plate end 14 engages a cylindrical peg mounted transversely in the base, Fig. 6 (not shown). Fig. 7 (not shown) shows a toe and heel projection on the base engaging a hook-shaped plate end 14, the axis of the locking screw 24 being arranged at right angles to the plane of plate 13. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown), the plate end. 14 cams above an inclined surface projecting from the free edge of the skirt, and the locking screw 24 is threaded through the base to bear in a recess in the locking end 15 of plate 13.
