Abstract

1,202,347. Fibrillatable films. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 27 May, 1969, No. 26758/69. Heading B5B. A film which may be fibrillated when stretched is produced by extruding one or more thermoplastic polymers through a plurality of separate regularly spaced orifices to form filaments which expand due to die-swell, the orifices being sufficiently closely spaced that the swollen filaments at least partially adhere to each other longitudinally. The orifices may be arranged in a linear or annular row; adjacent orifices may be staggered from each other in a zig-zag pattern. Tubular films may be inflated after extrusion. Upon stretching longitudinally the film fibrillates. Examples disclose the extrusion of polypropylene, optionally blended with polyethylene. In one example the component filaments are composite, being made from two different polypropylenes. In this latter case the filaments crimp upon heating.
