Abstract

1348317 Making yarns HERCULES INC 9 June 1971 [9 June 1970] 19786/71 Heading D1F A process for producing yarn comprises superimposing at least two fibrillated, linearly ribbed tapes or films upon one another, and converting the superimposed structure into a yarn. In one process, Fig. I, fibrillated ribbed films 1, 2 are drawn over bowed rolls 7, 8 to cause the ribs or filaments to separate, and the films are superimposed between rolls 5, 6 and 9, 10, the spaces between the separated ribs or filaments of one film each receiving a rib or filament of the other film. The superimposed films are passed through guide 11 and are twisted by device 12 to form yarn 13. In an alternative process, Fig. 2, superimposed, fibrillated, ribbed films 1, 2 are overfed between rolls 5, 6 and 9, 10 while being entangled by air jet 15 to form yarn 16. The films may be prepared from polymers having different shrinkage potentials, the resulting yarn being bulked by shrinkage. Films having ribs of different size may be used. In one exemplified process, two polypropylene films are used, one of the films being subject to controlled thermal degradation, the yarn produced being bulked by heating. In a second exemplified process, two films of different colours are used.
