Abstract

1,202,340. Composite spars. PARSONS CORP. 23 Dec., 1968, No. 61016/68. Heading B5A. A composite spar for use in a helicopter rotor blade is produced by wrapping resin-impregnated structural cloth 16 about a metal tube 10-13, with adhesive 15, encompassing the wrapped tube in a filled material, e.g. resinimpregnated fibreglass rovings preshaped to a shape 17 substantially the same as the desired spar cross-section, then wrapping further resinimpregnated structural cloth 21 and finally compression-moulding the upper and lower spar surfaces pressing the outer wrapping intermediate these surfaces with tapering rams while curing the resin, compensating for shrinkage of the resin on curing but maintaining the peripheral length of the outer wrapping. The fibreglass rovings of the " filler material " are preferably aligned longitudinally of the spar.
