Apparatus for determining the density of a liquid 11 comprises a tank 10 containing the liquid and a column 29 containing a reference liquid 33, the tank 10 and column 29 being interconnected by a conduit 32 and being respectively connected to chambers 15 and 21 which are provided with fluid inlets and outlets. As shown, compressed air under the control of a float 16 and valve 17 enters the chamber 15 through a pipe 18 at a rate determined by the level 25 of the liquid in the chamber 15 and passes to the other chamber 21 via a conduit 19 provided with a leakage device 20. The air pressure in the chamber 21 being the same as that in chamber 15 regulates a valve 23 controlling the inflow of reference liquid from a supply 27 which is fed with the liquid through a leakage device 34 from the chamber 21. The arrangement of the valves and floats is such that the levels of the liquids in the chambers are maintained in a common reference plane whereby the density of the liquid 11 can be deduced by measuring from the common reference plane the heights of the liquid levels 12 and 30 in the tank 10 and column 29 using devices 13 and 31, respectively. Instead of the float and valve arrangement in the chamber 21, a weir arrangement (35), Fig.2, (not shown) may be employed.
