Abstract

1,202,221. Automatic flow control. COURTAULDS Ltd. Jan. 16, 1968 [Jan. 17, 1967], No.2392/67. Heading G3R. A first electrical signal proportional to the weight of material in a hopper is compared with a second electrical signal which varies at a rate corresponding to a desired discharge rate so that any difference is effective to control discharge from the hopper to restore the discharge rate to the desired value, the second electrical signal being adjusted during re-filling of the hopper to cause subsequent discharge of the amount of material which would otherwise have been discharged but for re-filling. As shown, powder from a hopper 1 is supplied through an outlet 3 by a vibrator or screw feeder 2. The hopper and feeder are mounted on a weighing machine 4 associated with a pneumatic transmitter 5 so that changes in weight as the powder is discharged causes rotation of a potentiometer P 1 . Another potentiometer P 2 is driven by a motor M 1 at a speed representing a desired rate of discharge and whenever the position of potentiometer P 1 differs from that of potentiometer P 2 by more than a predetermined amount, a comparator 13 operates through an amplifier 19 and a controller 31 to switch on feeder 2 and thereby correct the amount of powder supplied. The speed of motor M 1 may be constant or, as shown, depend on the frequency of pulses from a meter 30 measuring the rate of flow of a liquid with which the powder is to be mixed so that the proportion of powder to liquid is maintained at a value determined by the setting of a pulse selector 29, switches S 1 -S 3 are moved to their other positions when the hopper is being re-filled so that feed from the hopper is stopped and, as potentiometer P 1 returns to its initial position, controller 31 causes potentiometer P 2 to return at a higher speed to a position which differs from that of potentiometer P 1 by an amount, determined by the movement of a potentiometer P 3 . corresponding to the amount of powder which would have been fed were it not for re-filling. Then, when switches S 1 -S 3 are restored to the positions shown, there is an additional feed of powder to make up for the filling interval.
