A mechanical display figure has a trunk and limbs whose movements simulate those of a human being and which execute simultaneous rotary oscillatory movements about two mutually perpendicular axes 29 and 38. The driving means includes a flexible connector F, and means for adjusting the extent of swing of the arms. Arm drive means.-As described, each arm 30 of the figure is rotatable integrally with a sprocket wheel 37 caused to make reciprocating rotary movements about an axis 38 on a shaft 29. Wheel 37 is chain-driven (F) by a sprocket 39 non-rotatably secured to a sleeve 41, the sleeve being made to effect to-and-fro movements along the axis of shaft 29 by means of one of two bellcrank arms 21. Shaft 29 is rotatable about its own longitudinal axis, being driven by a chain 26 and sprocket 28; one end of chain 26 is connected to a crank arm 24, the other end to a tension spring 31, Fig. 2. Head drive means.-The figure's head is secured to a plate 46 rotatable about a horizontal axis 45, Fig. 2. A follower 51 on a lever 49 engages a cam 53 causing vertical movements of a connecting rod 48: the head is thus made to nod. Prime movers.-An. electric motor 12 chaindrives a gear-box 16 whose outputs are crank wheels 17, 23 for the arms and cam 53 for the head. Crnak wheels 17, 23 have their respective crank arms 20, 24 mounted thereon by adjustable dovetail slides 18, 25 in corresponding dovetail grooves in the faces of wheels 17, 23. By adjusting the positon of these slides the degree of swing of the arms 30 may be determined. The motor 12 may be driven by clockwork or fluid pressure; and instead of the crank mechanisms, the figure may be driven by fluid-pressure activated pistons.
