Abstract
1,201,911. Surface treatment of refractory brick. TETRONICS RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. 7 Aug., 1967 [24 Aug., 1966], No. 37875/66. Heading ClM. [Also in Divisions H3-H5] A refractory non-conducting brick is surfacetreated by directing a plasma jet from a blow torch into a narrow passage defined between the surface of the brick and a separate counter electrode so that the surface of the brick melts and becomes conducting, thus causing the plasma arc current to flow from the torch through the brick surface and to the counter-electrode. The surface layer formed on the brick is stated to penetrate much deeper than layers produced by non-transferred arc plasmas. The brick may be preheated. A firebrick of the following composition: SiO 2 , 52À3%; TiO 2 , 0À5%; Fe 2 O 3 , 3À7%; Al 2 O 3 , 36/39%; CaO, 0À2%; MgO, 1À0%; K 2 O, 0À4%; Na 2 O, 0-2%, was surfacetreated in a transferred arc plasma as described for eight minutes to produce a glassy surface which was 10 mm. thick. The above brick was also treated as described whilst powder was introduced into the plasma. The powder contained 1 part CaO, 2¢ parts Al 2 O 3 and 6 parts of ZrO 2 (by weight). A fireclay sleeve rod was given a similar surface treatment whilst being rotated. One part by weight of CaO, 2 parts of powdered aluminium, and 16 parts of zircon powder (i.e. 65% ZrO 2 and 34% SiO 2 approximately) were added to the plasma. Instead of introducing substances into the plasma, the surfaces to be treated may be painted with the material it is desired to introduce. In one example a mixture containing 1 part CaO, 3 parts MgO and 20 parts of monazite sand (containing approximately 7% thoria) was made into a paste with water and linseed oil. The paste was painted on to the ceramic body, preheated in a muffle furnace, and then treated with plasma. Other additives such as carbon. aluminium nitride, titanium nitride, titanium diboride and forsterites may be employed.
