Abstract

120,178. Grousseau, E. de, and Vicongne, A. April 10, 1918, [Convention date]. Fats, extracting by solvents. To obtain fat, theobromine, and caffline from cocoa and chocolate waste, the waste is treated with a mixture of tetrachlorethane and phenol in the presence of aqueous ammonia. The solvents are removed from the extract thus obtained by distillation, and the fat removed from the residue by a solvent such as petroleum ether or dichlorethylene. The extracting and distilling apparatus are shown diagrammatically in the figure. Extraction takes place in a steam jacketed vessel 1 provided with a filter 3. The tetrachlorethane and phenol are supplied from tanks 36 and 37 through a tank 6 and pipe 10, and aqueous ammonia from a tank 8 through a pipe 11. Ammonia volatilized during the process is condensed in a condenser 7 and returned to the macerater. The solution is then passed to a still 16 which is exhausted by a pump 20. The first portions of distillate, consisting of ammonia and water, are received in a vessel 23 and returned to the tank 8; the next portion is passed to a rectifying column 24, whence phenol is returned to the still 16, and tetrachlorethane passes to a condenser 26, a receiver 21, and the tank 36; the last portion of the distillate, consisting of phenol with a small quantity of tetrachlorethane, passes by a pipe 27 direct to the condenser 26, and thence to a receiver 22 and the tank 37. The residue in the still 16 passes to a still 38, where it is treated as above described.
