Abstract

Fats, extracting.-Cocoa fat, theobromine, and caffeine are extracted from cocoa or cocoa waste by means of a single solvent such as tetrachlorethane or trichlorethylene, and subsequently separated. Fig. 1 shows apparatus for effecting the extraction. The cocoa or cocoa waste, which has been previously treated with acid to liberate the theobromine and caffeine, neutralized with a carbonate of an alkali or alkaline earth, and dried, is placed in a perforated vessel 1 arranged within a chamber 5 above the evaporating chamber 2. The solvent is then introduced into the chamber 5 until this is full, when it is discharged into the chamber 2 by a siphon 7. The vapour from the chamber 2 passes by a pipe 10 to a condensing- coil 14 and thence to a reservoir 15, when the condensed liquid returns to the chamber 5 through a pipe 16. A modification, suitable for use with solvents with a high boiling point, is described. The residues remaining in the chamber 2 are run off while hot and treated with carbon tetrachloride or benzine to extract the fat and caffeine, and the theobromine separated by filtration. The carbon tetrachloride is then distilled off and the caffeine extracted with hot water, leaving the fat.
