[Also in Division D2] An abrasion-resistant cellulosic sheet to make a transparent overlay in decorative laminates comprises a thin sheet of cellulosic material having distributed over its surface silica of a particle size between 20-mesh and 10 microns in an amount of 5 to 46% by weight of the dry sheet. It may be made by applying a slurry of the silica, e.g. from a secondary headbox, to the surface of a wet web of cellulosic material on a paper machine, then wet-pressing and drying the treated web. A decorative laminate may comprise a base of at least one layer, a decorative upper layer bonded to the base, and the overlay sheet of the invention so bonded to the decorative layer that it is rendered transparent; e.g. by impregnating it with a solution of a melamine-formaldehyde resin, and hot-pressing it on to the decorative layer.
