Abstract
1,201,046. Reactor shields. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 2 Nov., 1967 [22 Nov., 1966], No. 49945/67. Heading G6C. In a liquid moderated nuclear reactor, the moderation is contained in a pressure vessel surrounded by heat shields and shield walls, with an outer concrete vessel providing biological shielding. Channels extending through the pressure vessel, support the fuel rods, and a coolant flow. To facilitate the provision of the shield walls at the points where the pressure tubes enter and leave the moderator vessel, the walls are formed of interlocking blocks secured to extensions of the pressure tubes. Coolant and liquid moderator tubes pass through the shield blocks which are formed of a neutron absorber, e.g. cast iron. The blocks have hemicylindrical grooves to engage the coolant and moderator tubes and have clearances to permit lateral expansion. The block surfaces are stepped to reduce radiation streaming.
