Abstract
1,200,778. Surveying apparatus. CARL ZEISS JENA VEB. Nov.7, 1967, No.50516/67. Heading G1F. A photo-electric rangefinder comprises an optical system 3, 6 for transmitting an intensity modulated light beam and an optical system 1, 2, 6 for receiving the beam, the two systems being mounted for joint rotation about a horizontal axis X-X and a vertical axis Y-Y. The receiving system co-operates with optical elements 16, 10, 11, 12 to form a sighting telescope. A source of light 5 is positioned at the centre of the mirror 3 and the beam reflected from a remote reflector is focussed on a sighting mark 9. The mirror 16 enables the mark 9 to be viewed in the eyepiece 10-12. For measuring the rotation of the instrument about the axis X-X a graduated scale 17 is provided and is rigidly connected to both optical systems, whilst rotation about the axis Y-Y is measured using a fixed graduated scale 18. The scales 17, 18 are illuminated by light directed on to them by mirrors 19, 30 and prism arrangements. The images of the illuminated portions of the scales are focussed on a disc 28 bearing an index mark which is viewed by an eyepiece 29 and a mirror 36, a given rotation of the eyepiece about the axis X-X causing the mirror to rotate half the given rotation. The required horizontal and vertical angles are determined by the positions of the index mark in the images of the illuminated portions of the scales. The range is determined by transmitting the intensity modulated light reflected from the remote reflector to a photoelectric receiver 15 by means of which the phase of the incident light and therefore the range are determined.
