Abstract

1,200,626. Adjustable head rests; cushions. L. A. CALDECOTT and D. B. CALDECOTT. 11 Nov., 1967, No. 51388/67. Headings A4J and A4M. An adjustable head rest detachably mounted on the back rest of a seat comprises an inverted U-shaped structure 10 adapted to receive the back rest of the seat, and a pair of links 27 supporting a head cushion 28 and clamped by carriage bolts 21 to lugs 16 and the U-shaped structure 10, the links 27 engaging between helical blades 26 formed on discs 25 through which the bolts pass. Each link 27 comprises a closed loop of metal wire and the lower end of the link is located by a shrouded washer 28a through which the bolt 21 passes. The head cushion 28 comprises an inflatable bag having two forwardly projecting ears 32 interconnected to a back portion 31 through restricted flow passages. A valve (33) for inflating the cushion can be depressed into the rear wall of the bag and can be covered by a removable mirror (35). Each ear has a pocket for a stiffening plate 37 from which projects a bolt 38 for clamping the head cushion at adjusted height and inclination to the link 27. The head cushion can be completely detached from the links 27 and used as a flat cushion. In a modification (Fig. 5), an inflatable head cushion is supported by a rigid, channel-shaped structure (43).
