Abstract

1,200,618. Mixing polymer solutions. MONSANTO CO. 18 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., ,1966], No. 57304/67. Heading B1C. A polymer is mixed with a solvent to form a solution or slurry by feeding it downwards along the axis of a hollow circular curtain of solvent into a mixing zone, air entrapped! or absorbed in the solution being vented upwardly along a parallel path. An apparatus comprises a cylindrical spool 1 having an outwardly flanged (as shown, conical) lower portion 14 and rotated within a housing 13. Solvent is projected through inlets 7 on to the outer cylindrical surface of the spool and leaves the bottom 15 of the conical portion to form a curtain or film on the inner wall of housing 13. Polymer is introduced through a coaxial tube 2 or through the annular space 9'; in the latter case a screw blade 12 is secured to tube 2 to prevent the polymer being detained against the inner wall of spool 1 by centrifugal force. Air is vented up tube 2 or space 9'. The mixing zone is constituted by a vortex 5 formed by rotating mixing blades 3, and mixture is discharged at 8.
