Abstract

1,200,397. Coating apparatus. BETTER PACKAGES Inc. 17 Oct., 1968 [9 Nov., [1967], No. 49230/68. Heading B2L. A device for applying liquid to strip material, such as a label, comprises a housing defining a liquid reservoir, applicator roller means ,rotatable in the housing to pick up liquid from the reservoir, a feed roller rotatably mounted in the housing adjacent the applicator roller means, roller means biassed towards the feed roller adjacent the applicator roller means to define a nip for feeding the strip material to and over the applicator roller means, and means coupling the feed roller and applicator roller means whereby, when the feed, roller is caused to start rotating, liquid picked up by the applicator roller means is presented in alignment with the strip material before the latter is moved to the applicator roller means by the feed roller. A housing 12 is mounted on rubber feet 14 and is provided with a spout 22a for introducing liquid 25 into the base of housing 12. A pick-up roller 54, journalled in housing 12, dips into liquid 25 and engages an applicator roller 50 journalled in housing 12. Roller 54 co-operates with an adjustable doctor blade 56. A detachable cover 24 journals a shaft 32 carrying a feed roller 34, and a pair of rollers 44, 46, journalled in a bracket 42, are biased against roller 34 by a leaf spring 36 interconnecting bracket 42 and cover 24. Shaft 32 is coupled to a gear 62 meshing with a gear 64 which is coupled to shaft 50a carrying roller 50 and which meshes with a gear 66 coupled to a shaft 54a carrying roller 54. The arrangement is such that when a label 26 is slid down the sloping surface of cover 24 into the nip of roller 34 and rollers 44, 46, and roller 34 is rotated by hand, rollers 50, 54 are rotated faster than roller 34, and applicator roller 50 is freshly moistened when the leading edge of the label makes contact therewith. The moistened label is stripped from roller 50 by fingers 86a pivoted on a rod 90. Shafts 32, 50a and 54a are formed at their ends with tongues 72 which enter recesses in stub shafts journalled in housing 12 and carrying the respective gears 62, 64, 66, whereby the rollers may be removed.
