Abstract
<PICT:0738263/III/1> <PICT:0738263/III/2> <PICT:0738263/III/3> <PICT:0738263/III/4> <PICT:0738263/III/5> An apparatus for applying strips or bands of coating of a viscous substance to sheets or strips of material comprises a reservoir having a lower dispensing slit and a stencil in the form of an arcuate foil partially covering the slit and provided with one or more cut-outs for permitting the dispensing of the viscous substance contained in the reservoir, the thickness of the foil determining that of the coating and the shape of the cut-out its width, the lower portion of the reservoir being semi-cylindrical, in the form of a hollow cylinder or surrounded with a semicylindrical convex surface with the axis lying in a horizontal plane, and the viscous substance being discharged through the cut-out in the foil at least partly coinciding with the slit. As shown in Fig. 4, paste or adhesive 1 is contained in a cylindrical reservoir 3 having a discharge slit 4. A stencil 5 of thin sheet metal or synthetic material is placed around the container 3 and has one or more cut-outs 6, corresponding to the desired size of the coating, in the region of the slit 4. The strip 2, to be coated, is pressed against the stencil 5 by a roller 7, or a spring or belt. In the form shown in Fig. 9, the stencil is held in a fixed position on the coating cylinder 3 by clamping screws 21 and an additional segment slide 22 mounted on end hubs 23 of the cylinder 3, is provided for closing the slit 4. The slide 22 is secured to a bridge which can be swung by a lever 26. An angle piece 24 mounted within the reservoir 3 provides a scraping edge 12. The device may form part of a coating machine in which a web is guided past the device by deflecting rollers, the cylinder 3 being connected by flexible tubing to a main reservoir of adhesive. Fig. 12 shows a hand coating device in which a reservoir 3 is fixed on a handle 36, and is mounted in pivots such as 301 in a casing 29 which carries a stencil 5 having a cut-out 41. A spring 34 urges the casing 29 in such a direction that the stencil 5 tends to cover the slit 4; the slit is uncovered when in use by finger pressure on a lever 35. An adjustable support 38 is clamped to the end of the handle 36 by a screw 39. The hand coating device of Fig. 15 has a reservoir 101 having a slit 102 in the lower corner surrounded by a thin foil 105 having a triangularshaped cut out 106. The foil 105 is urged in such a direction that it tends to cover the slit 102 by a spring 108 connected between the shaft 109 (fixed in the side walls of the container) and an extension 110 of the foil. A handle 107 is attached to the foil 105 for moving the latter and exposing the slit 102. The side walls are provided with skid-shaped extensions such as 1041 and preferably form flanges surrounding the reservoir 101. In the modification shown in Fig. 21 a rotatable drum 112 preferably having knurled flanged edges is provided, to which the ends of the foil 105 are attached by screws 115 in such a manner that the tension in the foil is adjustable. A spring 108 in a groove in the drum 112 tends to keep the slit 102 covered. A filling plug 121 is provided for the reservoir 101, and may be combined with a pointer 122 for indicating the centre of the strip of coating; a suitably shaped cut-out is made in the foil 105 to accommodate this. A roller 119 may be provided between extensions (e.g. 1041) of the side plates for supporting the device on the material to be coated.
