Abstract

1,200,063. Polyurethane compositions. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 30 Nov., 1967 [1 Dec., 1966], No.54637/67. Headings C3C and C3R. Polyurethane compositions comprise a rigid continuous matrix of a polyurethane having a Shore D hardness of 40 to 90 and a discontinuous phase therein of hollow glass spheres having an average diameter of 5 to 500 microns and forming 10 to 60% by volume of the resin system, the resin system containing 0 to 50% by volume of voids in addition to those contained within the hollow spheres. The polyurethane is prepared by reacting a polyol with a polyisocyanate suitably in stoichiometric amounts in the presence of a catalyst and may be cross-linked by one of the reactive components containing three or more reactive groups per molecule. Aromatic diisocyanates are preferred but aliphatic and cycloaliphatic diisocyanates may also be used. The polyol component is preferably a low M.W. polyalkylene ether polyol, but may also be a low M.W. non-polymeric polyol, a polyester or polyesteramide. Small amounts of water may be added to the reaction mixture to form the additional voids. The hollow glass spheres are mixed with the polyol and polyisocyanate and the reaction mixture cured. Organic compounds of tin, lead and mercury are the preferred catalysts. The resulting products have a capacity for holding mechanical fasteners such as nails substantially greater than most woods.
