Abstract

1280404 Coated substrates PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 26 May 1970 [27 May 1969 7 July 1969] 25113/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Substrates such as polyurethane or polyethylene foam, natural or synthetic rubber or rubber foam, poly (vinyl chloride) foam, mild steel and aluminium may be coated with a coating composition which comprises (A) an ungelled, hydroxy-containing urethane reaction product of an organic polyisocyanate and a polyhydric material at least 50% by weight of which is selected from (1) a polyester polyol formed from (a) an alcohol component having an average functionality of at least 1.9 and (b) an acid component comprising a monomeric carboxylic acid or anhydride having 2 to 14 carbon atoms and an average functionality of at least 1.9, the alcohol and acid component containing a total of not more than 1 gram-mole of compounds having a functionality of 3 or more per 500 grams of (a) plus (b); and (2) a polyhydric material comprising a major proportion of a polyether polyol having an OH equivalent of at least 100 and being formed from a total of not more than one gram-mole of compounds having a functionality of 3 or more per 500 grams of polyether polyol and a minor proportion of a diol or a polyester polyol; and (B) an aminoplast resin. The compositions may be applied to the substrates by brushing, dipping, flow coating and particularly spraying. In specific Examples polyurethane foam and poly (vinyl chloride) foam substrates are coated.
